As someone who is fascinated by the first and second world war. A film focused on the German side and on a gut wrenching book made me excited to watch the film. The film is beautifully shot with amazing wide shots and great cinematography. One thing I would say is that all english speakers should watch the German version with english translations for a truly immersive experience. I may not know German or French but anyone speaking the language on screen sold it and made for the immersion. This film may not follow everything in the book but it is an adaptation, plus in my opinion, it followed the most important thing from the book: the pain, the horror, the trauma, and the brutality of war.
The film is beautifully horrifying. Honestly a 11/10 film and reminds me of "Letters from Iwo Jima", an American war film based on the Japanese side with a full Japanese speaking cast which in my opinion is another amazing film.
