If you're a noir buff at all you should enjoy this just for the styling, performances and "homage" of the thing. From a WW2 storytelling standpoint its strongest statement is that everyone does bad things in war. All of this makes the movie compelling enough to stick with it. Clooney's character is there to connect the dots, but his personal journey just doesn't elicit much emotion at all. The love story is packed with tropes, albeit well-executed. A lesser-known actor might have made this movie far more immersive. Cate Blanchette is stupifying, wonderful, and photographs beautifully in this genre. If for no other reason, see it for the great time she's having.
