Donald Farwell

While not the great, groundbreaking movie it could have been, Vox Lux ultimately succeeds as a dark, comedic provocation of who we are. The opening scene of a school shooting, immediately followed by film credits looking like an In Memoriam roster, up ends and forces you to pay attention. Portman’s performance is terrific and Dafoe’s narration provides some subversively funny moments.
