Part Gatsby part Graham Greene all Hong Kong at the time of the Handover. Immersive scene settings and characters unveiled with subtle intrigues, so rereading passages for clues was a large part of the magic of this novel. Hong Kong itself was almost one of the characters in this vivid chronicle. Highly enjoyable and much recommended. J

Eye opening and soul arousing … In order to better understand our ever incomplete lives—a surge with complexity—Mark Cocker writes of grand patterns in nature, and tellingly, of the captivating details of common chimney swifts. In a world bulked up with materialistic preoccupations— it’s these astonishing birds that set us soaring page upon page. The reviewers and blurbists hardly capture the range of his writing and the totality of his insights. I realize we are mere mayflies to all of sequoias that make up our world. Bravissimo !
