Hard read, mostly because "artisanal mining" is anything but what the words suggest and I just had to take time off from the weight of the sadness and ugliness that author relates. Also, DRC is unfamiliar territory, and many acronyms and no map are writing defects of the book. But that's simply a petty comment because the message is delivered, and the unavoidable conclusion is that we who benefit so obviously from this terrible process are complicit.
One takeaway is that there's a good line of inquiry for our leaders that goes wanting. Simply put it is, "What have you read lately? What books are on your bedside table?" I have this uncomfortable feeling that there is very little time spent in this most informative and worthwhile activity.
I wonder what the answers would be.
