To start off I would like to say that after watching trailers and reading critic reviews for the movie I was pretty excited to watch - specifically because the concept seemed fascinating. But it only took about 15 minutes into the movie for me to get the feeling that it was going to be a dumpster fire.
I’ll start off by saying that the reason the casting, writing, and dialogue was so dissapointing was the fact that the idea.. the concept of the movie as well as the cinematography was just so captivating. I feel they could have made a masterpiece with the film. It’s like M. Night Shyamalans adaptation of the avatar.
The scene of Natalie Portman waking up in her room was when I started to cringe. It was an abundantly clear that ventress was cast terribly and her strange body language and voice just did not fit the “eerie” feel I think she was suppose to give off. Then after a couple completely stupid and unanswered questions Natalie Portman is just allowed to suddenly walk around? What’s the operation, why did they have to drug her and keep her under? Then after almost no context she’s just a part of the operation, walking around checking on her husband. Is ventress the person leading the whole thing? They explained she was just the psychologist who picked out the people to be sent in to the shimmer. So ok I guess she’s the highest part of the chain of command? Where is the military. Then we cut to Natalie just looking out over the vast coast staring at the shimmer, I guess she’s been there for awhile now? And is approached by another girl. Little did we know this 2 minute exchange at the table would be literally the only background we get of the supporting cast. The next time that there’s any dialogue trying to build characters is when they’re on a CANOE? In the middle of the shimmer. I think the last thing they would be discussing when in this unknown place. The dialogue felt so forced and misplaced in an attempt to better understand the characters. Maybe over dinner or idek? It felt like everything was misplaced. Well anyways they tell Portman that they’re going into the shimmer and after a brief conversation with ventress she’s suddenly on the team. And they… walk to the shimmer? There’s no explanation of if they’ve tested this alternate dimension, there’s nothing explaining why the people studying it can’t just… walk up, without GOING IN, to get more information on what it was. No attempt to have someone just go 6 steps in the shimmer. Instead they send in small squads of people to just go explore? Then they’re finally IN. And the rest of the…. Apparent scientists and paramedics show absolutely no interest in understanding where they are, the only person that has a scene of trying to be “scientists” is the Portman. Isn’t Tessa Thompson suppose to be playing a genius? What’s the point of sending in these Ill equipped scientists if the second they’re in there they dont even attempt to use there knowledge to understand the place, take noted… or study what’s around them. Just a couple scenes of Portman saying some “biologist” sounding stuff. They just explore like abunch of kids. Well whatever, the scene where the “paramedic” is saying it’s “light tricks” and that she won’t watch the film again was just the most absurd stupid dialogue I’ve ever heard. I’m writing this review halfway through the movie and I’m not sure I’ll be able to finish it.
-finished the movie. Ending made it worse. I’d like my two hours back.
