Very gratuitous in many ways. It was fine at first but then felt just unnecessary. While he probably did not intend for it, it felt like Gibson sacrificed the message of Christ to glorify his own image of Jesus. I'm not sure what the right words are but it feels like this just Gibson's understanding rather than an actually faithful retelling.
