Incredible, it’ll undoubtedly be considered a masterpiece in a few years. So why the negative reviews? Unfortunately it happens to be about Joker, a character from an incredibly popular franchise! If this movie had zero ties to DC it still could’ve worked, been great, and saved itself from backlash. So in my opinion this movie isn’t for diehard fans of Joker, DC, Batman, etc, unless you’re very open minded. And if you are a fan, I’m sure there’s already tons of other great content tailored for you, but not this movie. Instead, in this film Todd Phillips dares to push the boundaries of that universe and the character to create something entirely new. It’s an intensely raw character study of a deranged mind in a flawed society that is to blame for said mania, and also celebrates it. Joker asks us to examine and reconsider what role we play in today’s society.
