What was this movie even about? Are we supposed to love Javier Bardem’s character or not? Why doesn’t the kid go to his dad’s school? Does Lyle just want to be accepted as a friend or overcome his stage fright? Why do we care about the mom’s cookbook or chocolate cherries? The plot here felt like a mashup of random disconnected components. So many things left without resolution. I’m baffled as to how this movie got made.
