The fact that the story skips around is the introduction of the balance of the chapters. Clearly the common theme of the settling of the center west and the brutality of both whites and Indians and the headlong rush of naive and inexperienced whites to find a home in a new place in the wake of the civil war which is barely mentioned is fraught with adversity.
