It seems to me that Ms Gabaldon did a lot of research and found it all so fascinating she wanted to add everything to the book. The result being an awful lot of . . . . well, nothing really. It was an interesting read, if you want to know how people back then prepared food for the winter or what they used to make paint colours. But it really didn't go anywhere.
I found it difficult to keep track of everyone and times/dates of events. It needed a summary of the characters to assist with reading - and a timeline of events too. Too many people with too many plot developments that weren't properly explained (like Fergus deciding to go with Briana but then didn't but that wasn't explained till the end of the book). I still enjoyed it - just not as much as I hoped to.
Also, why the bees?
