This movie was supposed to be about "hope, trust, and unity". They nailed hope and unity, but went about trust the wrong way, in my opinion.
Everything about the movie was fine. Loved the animation, the cinematography. The story line and twists were predictable, but it was all still enjoyable. Except the fact that they twisted Raya's trust issues and made it seem like it was Raya's problem for not trusting people which caused everything to happen.
*SPOILER ALERT*
Raya had trust issues, but it was valid. It's not like she had them from the start. It was Namaari who betrayed her first after Raya trusted her, and that cost Raya everything. She learned her lesson. Then, again, when Raya chose to trust Namaari, but she betrayed her the second time. I would be surprised if someone went through that and STILL not have the slightest bit of trust issues.
Namaari kept saying she never meant for all that to happen, but again and again, her actions spoke otherwise. How was Raya supposed to believe her? It felt as if Raya had been gaslighted by the entire plot in the end. Namaari even gaslighted her by saying that Raya was as much to blame for Sisu's death as herself was, because Raya didn't trust Sisu when Sisu trusted Namaari. BUT, it was Namaari who pretended to befriend Raya first, and it was Namaari who pointed the crossbow at Sisu first. Sisu wouldn't have "died" if Namaari didn't try to betray Raya the second time. So no, Raya should have had more faith in Sisu, but what Namaari did was much worse. So when Namaari said Raya's trust issues were the problem and Raya started feeling guilty, the whole plot became a major letdown. The last 30 mins of the movie became unbearable to watch. It just didn't feel convincing or right anymore, every value that the movie built up just went out the window.
Namaari had a valid reason for doing what she thought was the best choice for her people, while Raya also had a valid reason for not trusting people easily anymore. Because REMINDER, Raya did and it cost her her people. She feels guilty about it. She thinks it's her fault. Namaari saying "I didn't mean for that to happen" doesn't justify anything. She did what she did as a kid and when she got older and knew what she was doing. Namaari should own up to her mistakes and apologize, not blaming Raya's trust issues for it.
The writers really did Raya dirty. Do you expect Raya to continue trusting Namaari even though Namaari has betrayed her twice and NEVER once proved that Raya could trust her? Because that wouldn't have made any sense. Also, Raya didn't just have trust issues with everyone. She had no problem trusting Tong to help her even after they just met. So I don't understand how Raya's trust issues suddenly become the big problem. It just felt shoehorned.
And Namaari trying to redeem herself in the end didn't really have much of an impact and was too sudden. It didn't feel convincing at all. It only felt that she did it because that's how the plot should go. I felt no remorse from Namaari. Plus, Namaari didn't even apologize to Raya, at least for the time she betrayed her when they were kids. Namaari was the reason Raya had trust issues. Raya was the victim and she shouldn't have been blamed.
The first 2/3 of the movie was nice. The cast was amazing. But I've got to admit, the execution and the ending were really disappointing coming from Disney.
