I didn't like the last quarter of the book. Malouf seems to infantalise Frank Harland at the end. Early on he presents as a sensitive and educated person but not as the book progresses. Also, the female characters were not as developed or as positively caste as the male ones. The focus on male relationships was fine but why not just be upfront about any sexual nature of the relationships?
