I can see why the reviews are so divided. But I fall on the side of saying this game is a masterpiece. I played the first game 7 years ago when I was just around the same age as Ellie and it was really cool to play again all these years later and see her character grow just as I have. This game makes you rethink everything and I think that's why it's so compelling. As Neil said in an interview, the reason the Last of Us was so popular and powerful is that it told the story of these two complex characters and showed the
players the character's true nature and the nature of the world they live in. They didn't make a game that would just be the same as the first game or something that would just please fans either. They stuck with the same theme as before and told a hard, belief-altering story. There are always two sides to every story.
