Evocative super realism. This new director has created a memorable reworking of the coming of age movie, with flecks of family, obligation, roles for women and girls, black lives, immigrant lives and hyper modern french reality throughout. They are little girls that are acting out what the media has presented to us for decades now -- a hyper sexualized, super violent society with very little room for non-conformity (especially for non conformist girls and boys as they confront new feelings and thoughts and puberty). Don't believe the all this super conservative hype around the film, Cuties is a solid, intelligent, gritty film. And it's worth your time.
