.Disney's Strange World is...well a bit strange. Contains Spoilers.
My first ever movie review ...I'm so excited. I haven't watched a Disney kids movie in a decade so when I was babysitting and sat down to watch Strange World I was expecting not much at all.
Instead I got a Lesson in the evils of the fossil fuel industry and how boomers and Gen X are wrecking the planet.
Our main protagonist is a millennial gay boy (he/him) who is rebelling against his Gen X father's plan for him to take over the family farm. The farm actually produces a plant that fuels the society they live in so rather than a farmer think of him more as big oil! The Father also has his own daddy issues with his long lost old man who was a famous explorer who didn't care about what he found, just that he was the first to find it.
So the government discovers that something is killing the plants they all rely on for their power. This of course means an exploration to the centre of the planet to discover what's killing the plants. Along the way they find the long lost explorer grand dad and the three generation byplay is instructive in how only millennials understand the need to live with the environment in symbiosis.
The journey continues and we discover that the planet they live on is actually a giant turtle endlessly circling a water planet (this is the least of the plagiarism). The plant they rely on is actually a disease killing the turtles heart and after a brief attempt by the government to stop them, the family helps the bio systems own defences beat the threat. The Gen X and Boomer realise the error of their ways and go woke instantly.
The movie closes on a beautiful set of scenes as the society comes to terms with living in the dark ages. There is a nod to wind power picking up the slack for a single municipal building and there may be a suggestion of Grandad finding a loving couple to make a thruple with but it's not explicit.
Overall I think the movie was visually excellent and the plot (while being vomitus in it's message) is well crafted. I give it 3/5
