Not Miyazaki’s best work. Reminds me of Porco Rosso. A nostalgic reverie which meanders too much; cryptic but in a tired way. Animation - we have seen more stunning stuff, much more so, from this revered director. And as always whenever Miyazaki touches the subject of WWII he tiptoed around Japanese militarism, where one really hopes he could have been much more critical, as he dared taking on environmental issues and consumerism. Same kind of soft touch as in Grave of Fireflies.
One senses Miyazaki’s desire to explore and evolve, and hopes he’d be more daring in his next work, if he gets to that….
