Great movie. With a clear humanitarian idea. Thorough work on the details, costumes etc. The frame is borrowed from Japanese anime/comics. Godzilla, his motion, scale and materials are very Terry Gilliam—I would guess it was an intentional homage. Historically a movie about an enormous reptile is a way to touch philosophical questions—though this time it’s not about climate change, but about war trauma. When Godzilla was ruining the Ginza skyscrapers, it looked like a reawakening of Japanese imperialism, crushing the lives of the simple citizens. Another message is an appeal to reckon with trauma along a wide spectrum, not only the war, but any trauma that leads to the personality disorders and mental breakdown. Those are well played in a kabuki hysterical way.
