Decent enough but you really are better off if you stop reading at the second book. While, there are very interesting science concepts, it goes way too far into space magic. Plus it's a very grim and depressing book. Of the trilogy, this one is cosmic horror. The only thing that offsets the grimness is the fact that all the characters (including humanity) have everything coming to them.
I feel like I should be more angry at this book but it's too boring. I just finished it for closure.
Going in, I thought all the hate for the protagonist was unwarranted but good lord it's not enough. Prepare for a very long read of an unlikable blank slate do gooder that consistently makes all the wrong decisions for stupid reasons but is still constantly rewarded by plot armour.
