I just couldn't fathom what RS wanted to portray in this movie: was Napoleon a great tactician? Or not? Did it matter in the movie? Was it about battle or his character? About poitics about his wife? We don't know. What made Napoleon such an iconic figure of history? This movie unfortunately fails to answer this question. Napoleon is presented just as your average dude, lucky in some battles and not in others, doesn't stand out in any way, quite incomprehensible why he became an emperor or so famous.
And why is there a sum of all the people that died in his wars at the end? Was the movie actually about the horrors of war? We still don't know. It seems Ridley Scott lost the purpose of the movie halfway through (or earlier?).
I did like Phoenix's performance as a stern Corsican man, I could get that, but that's all we got.
As a French man, I left the cinema puzzled and disappointed that such an opportunity to reveal about such a famous man (good or bad, I don't care) was missed.
Sorry Ridley, this was not to my taste at all.
