Played the game back to back with the first without any prior knowledge of the critiques of Part II. I was very surprised to hear how controversial it was. I loved the first so much I immediately ordered the second, but for me, the gameplay was brought to the next level and story was much more emotionally engaging in Part II.
Whereas the OG has twists and turns, overall it felt everything was always headed the same direction and they tied everything up with a happy ending. Part II on the other hand is a nuanced noire tragedy story. The story has significantly more depth, and much of the criticism seems to come from the fact that they’ve brought you to like these characters and now force you to question their actions. For me the unique circumstances which makes the characters both good and terrible people is an interesting exploration on humanity. Rather than a classic revenge story, you look across the table at how actions affect others. The game was not only fun to play, but an emotional rollercoaster of a story which makes it more memorable than most for me.
