It is terrible shame that a movie set so specifically in a period of Hollywood filmmaking that Chazelle does only an amateur job at getting to its essence. The clothing, hair, fashion etc and a lot of the casting feels so wrong: apparently Emma Stone was meant to have the leading role and that might have helped. Robbie’s look is so Hollywood post 1970 that it is jarring (especially as I’m a vintage fashion purist in a way). (For a better period piece with a similar name go watch Babylon Berlin). This film feels like it’s trying to be meta & manic, naughty & reverent and it doesn’t work.
