First words so you don't have to read the review; If you've read the comics, or just enjoy violent R rated action flicks this film hits the marks.
Here it is people, the Guillermo Del Toro movies aren't this one. If you live under a rock and don't actually research the movies you watch then maybe that's your problem, sorry to be harsh. This movie should be taken and compared to the source material written by Mike Mignola, Hellboy's creator (not Del Toro). When viewed from that angle the movie shines. The occult, dark, scary, and twisted themes that Mignola writes into his stories are in full display and his inferred violence is instead thrown at you full force in the most grotesque way possible. When you think of "The Apocalypse" this is exactly what you should be imagining, and it's not a pretty thing. All in all, while at times the film felt rushed to fit so much backstory and material, and the one-liners were a bit clunky, it was a solid piece of work drawing from the inspiration of the comics.
I think what is most unfair to this film is that the critics, and most of couch critics/internet trolls, wanted this film to fail because it wasn't Del Toro #3 starring Ron Perlman. From the start every comment has been snarky when set photos, trailers, and news was revealed, and it's sad to see so many movies like this slammed by the media before the average movie-goer even has an opportunity to watch. Frankly, I believe most film critics are either paid or so enamored with themselves that they forget movies are for entertaining the masses more than an avant garde take on society and culture.
