I couldn't get over the fact that the starship was crewed by a bunch of immature 20-somethings. Such a thing would never happen in real life. if this is the best that mankind has to offer to send to possible first contact in a remote star system, we are in big trouble!
Then there's all the problems with the science. Even if I'm willing to suspend my disbelief that faster-than-light travel is possible, certainly faster-than-light communications is not!
To me it was unbelievable that Ian was not thrown in the brig for the duration of the voyage. The idea that the leader of a mutiny would be allowed to walk around unescorted and continue to be a part of regular ship duties is just ridiculous.
Then, there was his death. why on Earth was there an open electrical arc in the engineering area that had enough power to kill someone? A little bit of paneling and insulation would have saved his life!
How in the world could too well trained astronauts simply lift their visors on a foreign planet simply because the balance of oxygen seemed okay? Anyone and I mean anyone would immediately think what about bacterial life that might exist in the atmosphere?
Two episodes of this was more than enough for me.
