Barbie Review
Well I finally got a chance to watch Barbie because it came out on streaming, and it was everything. I thought it would be what the kids call “cringe” and just consist of statements and shows about empty white feminist imperialistic ideology and a lack of awareness into the complicated issues that women of all cultures and backgrounds face today. In other words my expectations were not too high. However I was pleasantly surprised that Barbie was more than I ever expected. I’m glad I didn’t watch it in theaters because I cried from beginning to end with little snot wiping breaks in between. It was a validation of my life; all the times I was told I wasn’t pretty enough, smart enough, tall enough, and just not plain good enough. It was a blast to my past of being instilled with absolutely zero self esteem and self efficacy from those around me which then translated into my future relationships. It was a lightbulb into why I accepted abuse and thought I deserved it. It was a reason for my imposter syndrome. It was a glimpse into those rare times I had a spark of self value only for it to be taken away by a well meaning remark from a family member about what a real lady should BE. It. Was. Everything. Those who don’t like this movie simply cannot identify with it or lack basic awareness of the plight of little girls that are not being lifted up as they should. It took 45 years for me to heal, and I’m still in process. I tell my nieces they are strong, smart, and beautiful everyday because feeling like you’re not good enough is a real thing for women in our world. I appreciate this film so much. I would definitely recommend watching! #barbiemovie #barbie
