I really wanted to like this show because I was familiar with some of the guest appearances from youtube clips. While I got a few good chuckles, I thought a lot of the jokes fell flat and the show suffered from an overall lack of direction.
I liked the characters and thought the voice actors brought a lot of personality to each scene. But there are so many moments where nothing funny is happening and it just felt amateurish.
The Halloween episode was basically all building up to one big joke, and when that barely made me smile, it made me feel like Desmond looking at the ant like “I guess that’s kinda cool…” (a kind of funny moment from the pilot.)
A few scenes were genuinely pretty funny but mostly what I found humorous was just the random dumb silliness like Jeremy or that stupid Jeb Bush meme or the end of the pilot episode. Not exactly the most groundbreaking writing in adult comedy, just like out of left field funny because its so dumb and weird.
Overall the show is enjoyable enough, it wasn’t without some entertainment value. There are flashes of creativity like the frequent use of mixed media and the occasional original song. But most of those moments aren’t funny at all and usually just feel like missed opportunities. (Are Simon S. Salty or the suited man in the alley or the H-E-double L song even supposed to be funny?)
But I do appreciate the show’s overall vibe, it sort of frequently uses shock humor but its also rather wholesome and cute and it doesn’t feel mean-spirited.
Some moments have been stuck in my head, like the iconic Mr. Boss being inexplicably creepy (“because…you’ll get lost!”) or that freaky CGI character leaping out of the screen.
And to be completely fair there were some bits that I really enjoyed, like the scene when bimblar went rogue and he beat that women in the head with a hammer. I thought it was like artistically and like tastefully done. I thought it was a—uh a well done sequence.
I don’t hate the show but I’m baffled at the overwhelmingly positive reception that its getting. I seriously thought something was wrong with my sense of humor after watching episodes 2-5 and barely cracking a smile and not finding any of the writing to be the least bit clever.
At its worst its like jokes my friends would make over xbox live but on tv. It’s like, just because you can do a Reagan voice doesn’t instantly equal comedy Zach—you have to actually say things that are funny.
But at its best it’s charming and the animation is kinetic and there’s nothing else like it on tv. This is the most conflicted I’ve ever been on a comedy show. Its so almost good that its frustrating.
Anyways overall I’d consider half the episodes good and the other half just okay. I rank the episodes from best to worst as follows:
1. Desmond's Big Day Out
8. Charlie Dies and Doesn't Come Back
7. Frowning Friends
6. Enchanted Forest
5. Who Violently Murdered Simon S. Salty?
4. A Silly Halloween Special
2. Mr. Frog
3. Shrimp's Odyssey
