A better title would have been “Mortal Kombat” The Beginning!!!
The moment I saw the trailer, I was blown away. To me, it felt like we were truly going to get the ultimate Mortal Kombat movie complete with the outrageous over the top fatalities. And then I saw the movie and my thoughts are very mixed to say the least. I will say the first and last ten minutes are the best parts, the rest is very mediocre.
Let’s get the good out the way:
Scorpion and Sub Zero are both badass in this, especially Sub Zero. Kano is the real star of this movie, and he’s not even one of my favourite characters! Jax and Sonya are fine, Liu Kang (dear me) what have they done to this character? Visually he looks the part but everything else about him was just weird. Kung Lao looks perfect, just a shame we didn’t get to see much of him. I must say though, Raiden looks great but Shang Tsung doesn’t look very intimating at all. The fight scenes are a mixed bag, the fights between Scorpion and Sub Zero are good and brutal. The rest, not so much. With the exception of one (you’ll know when you see it) the rest of the fatalities are quick and don’t have the impact you would expect.
The bad:
Cole Young – say no more.
The idea of introducing a new character is fine by me, but this character is beyond terrible. There were moments where I was thinking this guy cannot even emote any feelings or emotions. Don’t believe me? Let me give you one example: The scene at the dessert where Sonya discovers Jax (after he had his arms ripped off) lying down, Cole just leans against a fricking wall!!! Earlier in the movie when Sub Zero is after Cole, Jax tells him to take off with the van and save himself and his family, and in return Cole decides to lean against a wall instead of showing some sympathy towards Jax. That right there tells you how motionless this character is. And if you want a second example, just observe his communication (of lack thereof) with Scorpion near the end. Terrible actor full stop.
In addition to Cole, a lot of the villains are just bland, Mileena looks nothing like the character from the game, and this is something that Annihilation even got right!!! Reiko is just a boring side show with no personality and doesn’t even speak, but the same can be said about Nitara. The only decent villain was Kabal. And don’t get me started on Prince Goro!!
I will say that while this movie is far better than Annihilation (easy task there) it still cannot beat the original ‘95 film. Yes, the ’95 movie has dated CGI and the fight scenes look cheesy and lack blood and all but the story is far better and the characters were better developed than this film.
