A Summary View of the Rights of British America was Jefferson's forerunner to the Declaration of Independence. It is a persuasive, well-written document arguing for the rights of Americans. It contains such beautiful language as, “The God who gave us life gave us liberty at the same time; the hand of force may destroy, but cannot disjoin them.” This historically important document should be required reading.
