The protagonist Luz is a well written and realistic character. 14 year old girls aren’t smooth and they don’t have everything figured out. Luz is eccentric and a bit misunderstood, both very relatable traits in a character. She doesn’t fall into the trap of being the character who is right all the time and can do no wrong. She is optimistic, but she realizes when she’s in over her head. Some have said that the spotlight has been taken from the other characters to give to Luz , but almost every other main character has been given believable character development. Multiple episodes have been dedicated to other characters without straying off-topic. Amity has had major character growth and with that, her relationship with Luz. This may be the first time I’ve seen Disney take queer rep seriously. And it is definitely the first time I’ve seen a canonically queer main character in a Disney show.
Luz and Amity’s relationship doesn’t feel forced. They can both get very flustered, but it’s an appropriate reaction for 14 year olds to have. You can see where their relationship develops and why.
The show thoroughly explores the world it is set in and each characters story without losing sight of Luz’s aspiration to become a witch, and the fight against Emperor Belos.
I very much recommend 10/10.
