This novel has a decent albeit slow pace that sustained my interest until the author made a choice that nearly convinced me to stop reading. Ms Sittenfeld had her protagonist commit adultery, something totally out of character. Moreover, this onetime infidelity led to a pregnancy of a biracial child in a white household. It was if the novel suddenly turned into a soap opera for reasons only the author can explain. I did not believe any of it and lost interest in the story. It was authorial intervention at its worst, both silly and exploitive. I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them. This one not so much.
