Perhaps one of the worst movies I have watched in the recent times and possibly ever in the history of Malayalam cinema, especially from an ensemble of star casts.
The title gives away the premise of the movie which is the friendship between father and son, who find themselves in an unprecedented circumstance, and how they deal with it in the foreground of cliche dialogues, stale jokes and cringe worthy acting for a grueling 3 hours. The movie also seems to normalize live in relationships and pre marital pregnancies, in the most distasteful and lack luster manner, whether it was intentional or a by product of the lack of a sensible story, at the expense of spinning a catchy( failed miserably) father-son tale is something I wonder.
Unrealistic standards for a malayalee audience that are too numerous to count, if indeed that’s what the movie makers intended. Even if it’s marketed as a family entertainer, it is neither funny, nor relatable, just painfully long and torturous. The actors are clad in similar pastel tones of attire, as if straight of a themed magazine, the mothers dolled up with nothing short of too much make up and too rich obviously to have a buffet cooked by themselves without breaking a sweat, sharing that larger than life meal with your husband through IPad, looking impeccably dressed at all times. The unrealistic standards and seemingly Ad like movie, where everything is perfect, happy and pictured to be eye candy, may be intentional during these grim times as we know it, or is it because the profession of the lead actor is a sought after Advertising executive? Hard to say. The premise screams through out the screen time where the son who is played by an over aged actor who calls his father on a first name basis save for a couple of times. The syncopal episode Prithviraj had on seeing blood, should be preserved in the National history of Mankind for its truly the most natural and believable ones if I have ever seen one. For a kottayam Christian, the slang and the names were too familiar that the half baked, over used jokes on Eesho ( also Malayalam for Jesus) killed it.
Not sure what Mohanlal is going through, mid life crisis or otherwise, the only redemption for him is the Drishyam series in the recent times. Prithviraj with all that jazz, is probably too jaded with the premature success of his directorial debut to even fathom that this senseless story could have been saved by the appalling performances by all the leads except for Lalu Alex, who without a doubt is the only saving grace of this movie. The comedic timings are an absolute joke, the ridiculous interruptions by the actor who plays the wedding planner adds what to the movie besides a festival of cringe is a mystery. The rest are just there, obviously doing what their director wants them to, who clearly doesn’t know what he is doing either.
If anyone wonders why this is not on the major OTT platforms such as Prime and Netflix or released in theaters, it is because the universe is desperately trying to save your three hours. This movie is an excellent testament to the fact that pretty faces and famous names don’t make a worthy cinema. Just like Dilwale by SRK.
1/5, Absolutely do not recommend it, unless you wish to change your mind about boredom. It’s better to be bored and do nothing than watch this movie, in my humble opinion.
Instead, please watch Home on Prime or rewatch it if you have already. This whole movie and it’s cast can’t even challenge the phenomenon that is Indrans sir and his achingly beautiful performance in Home. Credit where credit is due. Indrans > all of BroDaddy.
