(review for season 1 only, haven't seen 2)
its pretty sad that all of the negative reviews are focusing on "wokeness" aka the inclusion of interracial relationships instead of the actual problems the show has. i don't think this is a one star show, i would rate it three stars. but i'm doing this for visibility like others have. its a fantastic premise that is absolutely crippled by things like bad dialogue, one dimensional characters, overuse of violence when it isn't doesn't contribute anything, and inconsistent pacing. but the dialogue is the clincher. conversations between characters usually feel uninspired and awkward. there is no nuance or subtly, and for a show that is supposed to be considered dark it is severely lacking in irony/satire and dark humour. the ultra violence does not meld well with the light airy feeling the rest of the show has. it works in the first and last episodes because its warranted. but in the episodes between i found it very quickly went from shocking to comedic. i don't have an issue with violence in fact i appreciate the more realistic feeling it gives to the universe. but when its there just because it can be it really cheapens the effect. any moments of true investment i felt in the show were in those first and last episodes, and they were mostly driven by shock value. all of the characters have such simple and shallow motivations that its hard to be truly invested in any of them. the only character i actually care about is marks mom.
that being said it has peaked my interest enough to want to see how it concludes, but this is not riveting content. its really derivative and the good just barely outweighs the mediocre. hopefully season 2 has some better writing. i'm shocked this has such a high rating. i mean it's still moderately entertaining but based on what people have said i was really expecting something that feels like its for adults. just having gore doesn't make something mature.
