Monster 'Thamizh' film review
Storyline:-
Nelson Venkatesan's only second film is about a rodent and the havoc that it creates once in the protagonist's abode and how the latter without harming the rodent gets to come out of the situation.
A neat film with SJ Suryah in the lead might sound an oxymoron but yes, this is. Such a refreshing breather it's to watch him in this film. He has transformed himself into the simple character that the role demanded.
From childhood days, protoganist Anjanam Azhagiya Pillai (அழகிய தமிழ் பெயர்) essayed by SJ Suryah, practices Saint Vallalar's teaching...compassion for all living beings is the path to God.
Anjanam, middle class TNEB engineer and a contented man in his thirties, gets rejected by many given his simplicity and economic strata. Mekala, played by Priya Bhavani Shankar, do not see him when he comes to her place for alliance. Back in Chennai, she finds a soulmate in Anjanam and they meet thereafter. Anjanam plans to buy an apartment and he finds one. When all settled, a rodent gets into his apartment courtesy the 'rusk' snack enjoyed by both the previous occupant of the apartment - a diamond smuggler and Anjanam now.
Story picks up momentum when the diamond stashed away (inside a rusk) in the apartment by the ex-occupant smuggler gets swallowed by the rodent. Smuggler gets into play and Anjanam in all his innocence not being able to interpret the smuggler's intent and his own compassion towards the rat forms the remaining part of the story.
Cast :-
The rat. In few scenes, it is the real tamed rat. Cute terrifying one. And rest through VFX.
Be it the entry of the rat, it's intelligence in many scenes, and it's purpose to have occupied Anjanam's flat in the last scene .. audience sure to fall for the pesky brainy pest.
Suryah as Anjanam has played the role with such earnestness and simplicity that makes the film come across so genuine. You do not see Suryah or his usual dark comedy and script .. neither the baddie of spyder and mersal. He has yet again proven his versatility. The scenes with landlord lady, alliance meeting, his one liner gentle comedy with Karunakaran and many scenes with his fiance ... He lives through the film as Anjanam.
Him explaining his contentment and definition of beauty is an ode to the character.
Putting up with his new sofa and wedding suite destroyed by the pest is a bit too much though. It's a film 😆.
Karunakaran as Suryah's friend shines with his comedy timing.
Lady lead Priya Bhavani Shankar is so natural as next door girl.
Music :-
Justin Prabhakaran has scored apt tunes to go with the thrill, comedy and rodent bites.
The film is so earthen in bringing out a common man's desire to live life in a decent moderate fashion.
A must one-time watch.
