Starfield would be an explorers dream if it came out a decade ago. This is a review specifically for the PC release.
Spoilers ahead.
While it gives me feelings of Skyrim and Fallout 3 in terms of story, it is decent at best. The Immersion in the game is easily broken by experiencing the several common Bethesda bugs. Ie: Characters sinking/rising through floors, Characters being interacted with when they are moving towards a solid object only for the object to push them back, the character then takes a step forward to return to it original spot where you initiated conversation only to be pushed back by the environment in an endless cycle. Quests not completing properly. characters getting yeeted into orbit.
While some of those can be amusing at times, they do get repetitive. There is also currently one game breaking glitch in where; you can't save. the game does not auto-save. you cannot access inventory/skills/ect. Sadly this means you have to close your game, and in some cases, restart your PC. Loading from a previous save does not fix the problem.
Base Building mechanic is somehow too simple yet too complex. you have to create supply routes from various bases, each with lines connecting to crates, and assemblers to make you stuff. The problem is transferring all the resources means you need a lot of pads to transfer them. each pad can only have one load/unload from one outpost. meaning if you had 5 resources coming from 5 different planets to your main base, you would need 10 pads as they can only be set up in pairs. you also need to manually connect each pad to each container. Fallout 4's version of this was much better for sending resources and shuffling around.
Gunplay/Gameplay: is just like another Bethesda game. you can be a "stealth archer" in this game too. just with bullets. Most of the abilities you get from the main campaign just aren't worth it or aren't fun.
RPG Choices: pretty standard but not as selective as you want. character creation isn't as free as other games. you get presets of each "background" you pick. so sadly you can't just pick the three abilities you want to start with.
Story wise: 4/5
Gameplay: 2/5
Base Building 1/5
RPG choices 3/5
If i had to describe this game in less than 5 words. "Instance loader."
you walk up to ship. Loading screen. you walk up to seat. loading screen of your character sitting down and switching to ship mode. you take off to another loading screen. cut to orbit. you initiate travel to a planet in the same solar system. loading screen. you land. loading screen. you leave the ship. loading screen. you walk around and do the whole process over. and. over. again.
This game does not have the freedom of movement like No Man's Sky.
It does not have the selections of Balders Gate 3.
This game can only be "Good" when it is objectively compared to other Bethesda games.
