This is an EP that is extremely abrasive, chopped up and powerful. Throughout, MC Ride’s vocals are screaming, chanting and begging. They loop, echo and fade. Zach Hill’s drums pounding throughout with the powderized samples, echoing in and out make this album an incredibly wild ride. Production on this is, for lack of a better term, raw. It’s not bare, not even close, you can tell that a lot of care was put into how it flows. It isn’t like a looping, loud and disheartening mess, either. Progression is apparent and it feels like a new experience. You can sometimes make out patterns, with the chanting of Ride’s vocals, which are sometimes even pitched, chopped, and modified in any way you can imagine, or maybe Zach Hill’s frantic drums, or the sounds themselves, kind of in a circle but going forward simultaneously. If you haven’t ever listened to Death Grips before, this is not a good first listen, unless you’re into this kind of ordered chaos. Once you’re settled into them with their easier-going albums, try this. You might not like it, but that’s okay. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad. So if you’re a long-time fan, you should try. If you’re new, try it after some of their other pieces, so you can decipher this one a bit easier.
