Spike Lee did a poor job on this joint.
Two of the main characters were actually too young to serve in Nam at the time and ironically one that was old enough was actually a war protester.
I wish Lee did employee some actual Vietnam Vets to act in this joint. Except for Lindo character Paul, none of the characters also except Lindo's son's character had any real depth or actually seemed to reflect on both the changes and hardships of the Vietnam Vet African American experience: prison, a battle with drug addiction, many lost comrades that have passed on, family joining military based on their experiences.
3 out of 4 don't drink anymore. Health issues. The realities of that find and the African American movement.
Meaning, these men have matured, realizing the gold is really not a lot of money there would be no foolish talk of donating the gold to some vague cause only the realities of their needs, how they will get it home and how they would split it, charity and political causes come later.
They would have already had a plan to smuggle out the gold using veteran mercenaries that they know and can trust, brothers from their bike club, that sort of thing.
A love/hate thing about the politics during Vietnam and the politics of today a no one size fits all scenario.
A disciplined way they treat the natives where Lindo's character Paul would have gotten checked for his treatment of the Vietnam boy.
Too far-fetched and not enough depth in many of the characters as I just stopped watching it.
The only reason I endured that bad trip was to see one of Chadwick Boseman's last performances.
This movie should have had more reality and depth to it, Lindo's character Paul should have gotten greed, tried to double-cross the team and winded up getting killed for his treachery while his son getting his dad's portion must live with the fact that his father a selfish rodent that only reached out to him when he needed him. A self-centered gangster whom his son did love and yet must suck-up the justice of his death.
The men reasoning to give Eddie and Storming Norm's families a fair share and the realities of freeing themselves from debt, poverty, slavery and the hamster wheel cycle.
Unfortunately this joint sucked.
