Starfield has built upon the core of other Bethesda greats like Skyrim and Fallout 4 before it. It has built up the game in customization in terms we have not seen before. It looks so promising. BUT the developers have completely neglected their core and are trying to do too much, maybe in the name of “realism?” The crafting and storage system is completely broken in terms of having fun. It is more tedious than anything I have seen before, mainly because of the vast size of the game and the lack of accessibility. Anyone who has played any of Bethesda “looter shooter” knows how looting can over-cumber your player quite quickly. In this game there is no infinite storage system. The max you can have per container is 150 mass, which fills up quickly with the sheer amount of items in the game. Ok so that’s extremely unfortunate, but not game breaking. This next part is game breaking imo. The storage containers have no way to label them, and they do not connect to crafting stations. You have to manually make sure your inventory has the right materials before crafting. So what? I’m suppose to remember where everything is in 8 outposts? With at least 9 containers in all? I have about 1000 mass on my player atm and have no idea what to do with it. My ship has another 1000. I went to the 2nd biggest city and loaded up on materials to craft, thinking I could just store them, like fallout 4, fallout 76. But NOPE I just wasted 20,000 on an inventory burden. It’s almost like the Devs have not played any of the other bethesda games. And if they have they truly have not fallen in love with them like I have. There’s so many things Bethesda has improved on over the years and I was so excited for this next iteration. But it has completely fallen short of my expectations and my year has been ruined. I can only hope when the game releases tomorrow, that the rest of the community will have the same sentiments and hopefully it’s a quick fix. Regardless I know the modders will eventually fix any mistakes. But I would rather not wait for that.
The only fix that has been presented by the Reddit community so far, is not even a fix. More like a temporary solution at best. In the lodge you have a room that has infinite storage. But then again it doesn’t connect to localized crafting stations. You have to walk at least 50 yards between your room and the basement just to research or make some items.
They took some of the best games ever and built upon them in customization that I was so extremely excited for, but completely forgot their core values.
I just mentioned my biggest gripe. There are plenty of other issues with this game but I just rather be done complaining.
Traversal of planets on foot is pretty abhorrent though. You barely move. There isn’t much to look at. And finding crafting materials is no easy task either. Good luck finding a beautiful place to put an outpost. Unless you want to spend hours traversing the world on foot. Yikes Bethesda. This isn’t you
