Disney ruined Mulan with this reboot. If you consider watching this garbage know a few things: they made Mulan this strange superbeast as a child which completely disregards that the original Mulan was a normal person. It kind of feels like the message here is: girls can be better than boys but only if they are born with super abilities. Instead of girls are as good a boys and both can be good through practice and determination. They also gave Mulan a sister? I guess to equal out Mulan's abilities they threw in a female character that is a "normal" girl? Mushu is not in this movie. Major miss with that. I get not wanting to make it seem "cartoonic" but come on...that first scene with little Mulan doing backflips off a balcony and catching herself with a rod wasn't? Also, it's giving supernatural vibes and for what reason? The "Joan of Arc" story to empower women wasn't enough? The only redeeming quality is that they sing--oh whats that? They don't actually sing? They just do weird montages with the original soundtrack? Not to mention the new villain which they made a woman? I'm not complaining but why does it seem like they always end up pinning women against women? Of course Mulan cannot be the only woman who can use chi--they had to make a mirror image evil one.
Conclusion: I'm not going to tell you not to watch it, but watch the original first maybe? The original Mulan tells the story of a young woman fighting gender roles while trying to protect her land and her family. She is not a superhuman. She is a woman who must learn how to fight but overall, she must use her wits. The rebooted Mulan is a pathetic attempt to do too many things and for what? It's a disgrace to all that the original stood for. Do better Disney. When we asked for more realistic women we meant REALISTIC women. Not superhuman women who have magic powers that make them strong.
