As a Hispanic person, the thought of Netflix creating a telenovela was terrifying to me, thinking that they could mess up the genre that has been so popular in my home country for so long. However, after watching in both English and Spanish I was amazed at how they hit the nail on the head. While it is a little less dramatic compared to a classic telenovela, take La Reina Del Sur as an example of the perfect telenovela, I was still thoroughly impressed. My disappointment came when I read the Google reviews. Some may take this show as 'dramatised' or 'overdone' or say that the actors aren't producing their lines correctly as they watch with an English dub, but as someone who grew up watching telenovelas with her family, this show was done perfectly. It would have been a huge disservice to the Hispanic community to have made this show mellow or even boring to please people from a different culture. If you are reading this review as a Hispanic person or someone open to the ideas of another culture let me assure you that this show was done properly. Despite what others may say.
