I watched this film after viewing the bloated Academy Awards. I’m glad I hadn’t read the reviews that picked it apart. I loved it, even the mismatched pair. Maybe it was the nostalgic glance back at an old movie palace , the light from the seascape, the finely played characters against emerging themes of the time, the 80’s (maybe a few too many) but in the end some compassion, an unlikely friendship, that beautiful theatre and the odd ones who worked there, and Philip Larkin’s poetry. I couldn’t believe it wasn’t nominated.
