I thought this film was a stark depiction of the intense pain of the human condition.
The setting was a metaphor for the trudging through of it all.
Nothing was meant to be taken at face value. The characters were complex inching their way to honesty with themselves and one another.
The shots of the sad and misused apartment were symbols pieces of self grinding away settling into themselves just like the characters were.
The mother was a survivor and heartbreaking...trying to get through and holding her grief close.
The characters and setting were one
Each speaking for the other.
There was a ray of hope at the end.
A light in as the apartment door was closed and the daughter offering to ride with her parents.
This was a dark complicated character study where the simplicity of the settings held the nuances and intricacies of a family living through their collective and personal struggles.
