I don't care that it's an adaptation of Shakespeare. I hate the play.
It is the embodiment of everything wrong with the patriarchy and societal gender roles. Unfortunately it does less than a lax job to condemn it. Instead, it carelessly embraces the idea that women are to be subservient to men, and that all obedience is a holy quality. This is obviously problematic for today's standards.
I understand that this disgusting sexist belief was the norm for Shakespeare and the film's writers, but I am writing a review in 2024, for people in 2024, most of whom reading this were yet to be born when this film released. Does it remain unfair for me to criticize in this manner something still worthy of heavy criticism?
I just hope people today can recognize how terrible the sentiments in this film are.
