I love the Mercy Thompson and Alpha & Omega series, and have all the books. This one is by far my least favorite. The parts with Sherwood and Grandmother Spider were the only parts that felt memorable or important to the overall story. The rest of the book felt like the author wrote this book after watching Thor: Ragnorok. The Viking mythology and sense of fate didn't feel like it went in this world. She has included Christianity, demons, volcano gods, and Native American spirits in the past, but this just didn't ring true the way those did. The part about New Mexico also felt pointless to the story; it felt more like a way to include modern politics into a make-believe world. Like most people, I read books like this to get away from real life. Overall, the book felt like a weird filler story to lead into the next book that will likely have a heavy lean on Sherwood's story and why Bran sent him, which I am very much looking forward to. I get the sense that all hell is about to break loose in Mercy's world in a very exciting way, and I am here for it. This book lacked the fun, intensity, and charm that I have come to associate with these books. I hope the next book is a more interesting story, and adds to the main storyline in a way that this one seriously missed.
