I was 14 years old when it came out, living in a home that felt unwelcoming, and even dangerous, and in a country that was increasingly war mad, chewing up the young men of my generation for no good reason. It brings tears to my eyes, almost sixty years later. There are, of course, things going on now that make many of my fears from those days seem, almost, inconsequential. Almost.

This is from Joni’s later, more challenging period, when she had befriended one of the most challenging jazz musicians on the planet, Charles Mingus, and set herself the mission of singing his blues. She has other jazz geniuses working with her, Wayne Shorter and Jaco Pastorius, most notably. It’s a dark and magical thing, what they put down together.

Nicholas Freeling is one of the finest mystery writers, ever. The Van der Valk novels are all excellent.

An album that has both calmed and fascinated me for many years.
