Liked it, but with caveats.
It's hard to top any original. Matrix Resurrections is not on par with the first movie, but it wasn't as pitiful as I thought it would be, either.
The first Matrix movie was so unique that even the second and third installments couldn't come close to the same caliber.
What worked in Matrix Resurrections: A few original cast members from the first and second movies, familiar theme music, solid fight scenes, and a reasonably intelligent storyline. Also, Priyanka Chopra and Neil Patrick Harris fit their roles well.
What did not work: everyone else cast (lol) and the weird machine animal things. The remaining supporting actors did not work... at all! They dressed up in costume well and looked the part, but the supporting actors' depth in the first three movies wasn't apparent with the supporting actors in Resurrection. The machines that appeared to be animals seemed like an odd addition to the story. It's the kind of thing movies do when they want to appeal to children (think Ewoks in Return of the Jedi or Jar Jar Binks in The Phantom Menace); the film is rated R, so I don't understand writing them into the script.
Overall, the movie kept my attention, and it was nice to see the original characters together again, though I doubt I'd watch it a second time.... In contrast, I've seen the original Matrix several times and will continue to watch it over the years.
