I was told this is a good read, but no, not for me. It is the writing and style. The plot is interesting and perhaps the movie can do a better job as it'd need to condense things and go quicker. Still surprised some described it as the best book they've read.
It's predictacle. The writing style is young, bit mundane, cliche and can be annoying and dragging. I needed to skip parts as they do not add much as the reader has already caught the gist. And if you already know a bit about WWII, this novel is a dull read, esp the first half, even if it is a good try and has a story and did give a crucial info and it's the Vel' d'Hiv'. The editor could have advised a shorter novel, and denser style and to use a more literary language for depth and emotions.
There are frankly better and very good writing and novels for youngsters and adults about WWII - gripping and more pertinent - that should be read too: THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS, UN SAC DE BILLES, etc.
But SARAH'S KEY is described as brilliant, amazing and poignant. I still wonder, what if I am the one that is missing something, yet I read a lot. Anyway, that is a personal point of view... a prendre ou a laisser ;)
