*spoilers!!* The chemistry between the two leads is great, the dialogue was funny and authentic, but the ending was such a let down! You can really tell this is based off a book written in the early 2000s as it has that Nicholas Sparksy tragedy vibe. I immediately knew one of them was going to die, and I was just glad that they didn’t have her die in 9/11 or something cliche (I thought that’s where we were headed as the ending took place in 2001.) It seemed that the writer didn’t know how to conclude the story in a satisfying way so he did the most obvious thing possible instead. The will-they-won’t-they Rachel and Ross thing was also very early 2000s cliche, and the constant missed opportunities and poor communication began to seem like signs that they shouldn’t be together. I ultimately stopped rooting for them as a couple, and was totally disappointed when she ditched her French boyfriend for this bloke. It’s classic Western toxicity to have the characters pining for each other while in relationships with other people and presenting it as romantic rather than sneaky and disrespectful to their current partners. I’m tired of watching shows and movies where the writer’s ambition exceeds their ability to deliver.

The movie started off with a lot of promise. It's probably one of Glen Powell's best performances. However, the writers (one of which was Powell, if I remember correctly) did not know how to stick the landing. The ending was really disappointing, and Adria Arjona's character was so, so disappointingly one-dimensional and the stereotypical over-sexualized, needs-a-savior Latina. Powell's character seemed like a really intelligent, complex guy at first, but by the end of the film he seems like an idiot who has no respect for himself. The villains of the film, Arjona's husband and the other cop, are caricatures.
