34 years of Main Azaad Hoon! Written by Ashok Singh. The king of commercial cinema and the queen of art cinema came together for the first time. This was the first pairing of Amitabh and Shabana. They were together in a couple of Desai films but never paired together. Earlier the film was called Satyam. The accompanying poster in this post was in several grocery stores in December 1989. Just a poster was enough to generate excitement. Even though most knew there was only one song in the film, the audio cassette was selling very well. I remember finishing my last exam and going straight to the video store to get this film. That night I had to go to a holiday party and when I came back at 2am, I put on the VHS of this movie to check the print and was curious to see a few scenes. Those days there were no trailers and the only thing I saw beforehand was a few still images. The film was so engrossing that instead of a few minutes I watched the whole film! That’s the excitement a new Amitabh film had. At the time he wanted to do a role that went against his star image. There are so many memorable scenes in this film. The way he interacts with the audience at their level in the auditorium was brilliant. Rambhav the village sarpanch became popular as Amitabh kept mentioning him. The scene where he tells the politician that after 40 years of independence, they government can’t even give a clean glass of water to people, is memorable. Amitabh gives one of his career’s best film. He is a mysterious fellow with no name or background. He arrives in the city with no past, family or history. The way he becomes the voice of the people is mesmerizing. The film won a Filmfare award for best dialogue which was written by Javed Akhtar. The film generated 1.5 crores and the budget was 1 crores. The video cassette released simultaneously. Media called it a disaster which it was not. Excellent production values, real characters, gripping story. Rohit Shetty films are always standing apart! The medium is different but the production is grand! As an entertainer it is much better than films of 2023, like Pathan, Jawan, Tiger3, Gadar2, Salaar, Leo etc

Great film. Akshay shines. Supporting cast is excellent. Not a dull moment in this film. The production team researched this film and created a great inspirational story. Akshay has been involved since 2017 and had lengthy discussions with Jaswant Singh Gill.
