I've considered the reviews I've read previously to rating this film.
I still can't rate this film for its time any less than the 5 stars it deserves.
The story line is all encompassing. Engaging the audience in the first scene of King Arcisius of Argos condemning his daughter Danaè and her newborn son Persius to be cast away for shame she brought apon him, and his city of bearing an illegitimate son! For fear of displeasing the Gods! Especially Zeus! Of whome the city worship most of all! Little did they know that Zeus impregnated Danaè and that he, the God of thunder and ruler of Mount Olympus is the father and protector of Persius the demigod! The plot of the film make clear the affection Zeus holds for his half human half God Son! It also construeds Zeus's confidence in Persius that he is of good heart, virtuous, and worthy of the burden he were borne into as heir to the Kingdom of Argos!
This pure and virtuous being is then thrust into an unknown land by the Goddess Thetis! She is offended by the favour Zeus bestows on Perseus due to how he has treated her own demigod son Calibos!
Calibos is the polar opposite of Persius! He is spoiled, aggressive, wasteful, and overly confident!! He is also dependent of his mother's support!
Calibos with his underworld thugs underestimates the love and will of Persius towards Abdromeda! That leads to calibos's hand being taken, and his riddle being solved!
This has dire consequences on andromeda! Calibos demands that his mother Thetis seek revenge on his behalf! The Goddess doesn't seem to endorse this request until andromedas mother declares her daughter more beautiful than all, even than the God Thetis herself!
And so the film begins! Persius is betrothed to the Princess andromeda, he has to overcome many challenges! The stygian witches! The skeletons! The three headed dogs! Scorpions! He uses and loses gifts to help him along the way. His counterparts are called upon to contribute to his cause, which they either do gladly, or begrudgingly or maliciously. All contribute to the saga of the story perfectly.
Heroism is the order of the day, and purity. Great plot, great mythological story telling, great actors, great score.
Bloody love this film! Location, cinematography, one motion puppetry! Ta. Pegasus!! All of it!! Guys! Omg! The Kraken! Medusa! Boobo. Its old! But watch it!!
And don't forget! Miriam Margolies "creamed in her knickers" when she went to see Lawrence Olivier back stage! Fancy that!! Vicky xx
