It’s best not read as a thriller or a mystery, but as a serious character study. It felt tragic like The Great Gatsby. Not as lyrical as Fitzgerald, but well written, and with well drawn characters. The development of the story takes a long time, but it’s worth trusting the author, and the final impact, for me, was a kind of cinematic vista of sadness like with Gatsby and a meditation on how we are led and misled by our illusions.

I’m about 75 hours in, approaching level 30, and enjoying building my character’s skills. Playing as V. Started as Corpo. Pretty fond of Judy, Claire and Panam. Johnny kind of grows on you - no pun intended. Just starting to get a feel for the city. Actually I like the desert the best - the Sunset Motel. I’ve got a 2070X card and a new rig, so no problems with the mechanics or game play. I kinda wish there were real ripperdocs (get moving on that, Elon). Prefer getting around on motorcycles, cars are a bit unwieldy. Used the tabula rasa, and have the brancesi painting. Have mostly emphasized crafting skills. In the past, I’ve been a fan of the Elder Scrolls and Medieval Total War and played hundreds and thousands of hours respectively. I don’t rush through games. This is a fine game. I don’t agree with some of the negative reviews. I play on a cyber power PC with Predator 35 inch monitor, i7 cpu with a keyboard and an ancient Microsoft Trackball. Your experience may be quite different on an Xbox or PlayStation. I couldn’t operate a controller if my life depended on it.
